When I was first introduced to essential oils, I thought I stumbled upon something cool and new age! As it turns out essential oils have been loved for many thousands of years. I got into essential oils as part of my research of natural solutions for all my health problems. Don’t you ever wonder if life could be a little easier? Essential oils was the answer to this prayer. Discovering essential oils have been used my many civilizations for centuries gave me confidence. I discovered that there are many similarities between the teachings of the scriptures and the essential oils too. How awesome is God!
I am happy to present to you this class by way of video presentation. In this video I’ll share the history of essential oils as they relate to peoples of the Bible.
A great resource for further study on this subject is Healing Oils of the Bible by David Stewart.
The outline for this video is as follows:
The objectives of this video are to:
1. Show Reverence to God’s Intelligence & Creation
2. Feel God’s love for you
3. Understand how He helps you
- The Bible mentions oils for healing, cleansing, and holy anointing more than 500 times. For example, Ezekiel 47:12 says, “Their fruit [from trees] will be for food and their leaves for healing.”
- The Biblical oils are Aloes (AKA Sandalwood), Cassia, Frankincense, Galbanum, Hyssop, Balm, Spikenard, Cedarwood, and Myrrh, among others.
- Moses used oils to protect the Israelites. God gave Moses a recipe for an oil blend to be used in washing and anointing the Israelites. Refer to Exodus 30:23-38. This is a blend of Myrrh, Cinnamon, Cassia, and Calamus all mixed in virgin olive oil.
- Moses used this blend in anointing the priests. Exodus 30:30 “And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest’s office.”
- The Bible also appears to allude to the practice of reflexology. Leviticus 14:28 “And the priest shall put of the oil that is in his hand upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the place of the blood of the trespass offering”.
- Psalm 23 – The Biblical meaning of “anoint” is the Hebrew word “masach” which is to “rub or massage.” Very similar to the English word “massage”. (Exodus 30:22-25 – Sacred Anointing Oil)
- The original healers in Bible-times were priests, who often did their emotional/physical healing in temples. (Leviticus 8: 1, 2 & 10-12)
- In Jesus Christ’s parable of the Good Samaritan, the Good Samaritan uses oils to heal the wounded traveler. Luke 10:34 “And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.” Because oils are very expensive, this is also a story about true brotherly LOVE for a stranger.
- Like many inhabitants in the New Testament, Mary and Joseph, the Earthly parents of Jesus, used oils to keep their baby and themselves healthy (Matthew 2:1-12). Myrrh and Frankincense have many powerful healing properties. Myrrh connects us to Mother Earth. Frankincense connects us to Father in Heaven. As far back as when the Jews lived in Egypt, the people of the Bible used both these essential oils in pregnancy and in birth.
- Christ’s friends used one liter of essential oils to prepare Christ’s body for burial.
- Many scholars think that the Gold given to Jesus was Turmeric not the Gold metal.
“And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, Joseph and Nicodemus wrapped it with spices in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.” John 19:39-40.
- The Bible refers to Cedarwood oil as the “Oil of log” Leviticus Chapter 13 & 14
- The Bible uses positive terms for blends called Oil of Joy or Oil of Gladness rather than a negative term like Anti-depressant! Psalms 45:7-8, Proverbs 27:9, Isaiah 61:1-3
- Many oils, especially Myrrh, are detoxifying, purifying, and beautifying. Take beauty tips from Queen Esther.
“Now when every maid’s turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women…” Esther 2:12
- In the Bible, people often gave essential oils to newlyweds for fertility. “I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, and aloes, and cinnamon” (Proverbs 7:17).
- Modern Science finds some of oils to be effective to promote overall health, vitality and longevity. Refer: www.aromaticscience.com
- Christ commanded his disciples to heal people. “And they went out…and they anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.” (Mark 6:12-13)
- People in the Bible often kept essential oils in the treasury because of the grate value they placed on essential oils. (Matthew 26:6-12)
- People of the Bible approached healing from many directions: emotionally, spiritually, and physically: (James 5:13-16)
