Abraham-Isaac Heart’s Priority Challenge
It is easy to know when we need to realign ourselves to God when we’ve sinned and we know that we’ve messed up. On the other hand, it is more difficult to know that we need to change and realign ourselves when we are comfortable being good and doing ‘good’ since we can’t always recognize how much they’ve edged God out and allowed other things to take up their heart space.
How can we tell if we’ve edged God out (EGO)? When we are stressed, overwhelmed, overworked, unhappy, sick, and discouraged, we have edged God out. Other things are taking priority and we are trying to solve it all with our limited understanding.
How can we tell if we have God as our top priority; our first love? The heart compass will help us know. Yes, it is that simple. For those who immediately feel a sense of resistance when you think about surrendering to God, release your grip a little at a time and eventually you will be able to re-prioritize your heart.
It is important to realign ourselves because realigning and making God our priority makes it so that our life is happier, more peaceful and more purposeful.
God showed us how to re-prioritize our heart in the bible. You can read about this story in Genesis 21-22. To me, the story is about reorganizing the priorities of Abraham’s heart so that God comes first. When God comes first, then we will have clear communication pathways to and from God.
In this story, God blessed Abraham with the his heart’s desires which is to have a son under the covenant with his wife. His wish was granted. His wife, despite old age, birthed a son. Abraham loved his son very much. God wanted to know if Abraham loved God more by testing his obedience God.
One day, God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on a mountain.
“2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.” (Genesis 22:2)
Abraham did not want to sacrifice Isaac. But Abraham wanted to obey God. Abraham and Isaac walked up the mountain together. Isaac helped take up some wood. Isaac asked where the lamb was for the sacrifice. Abraham told Isaac not to worry. Abraham built an altar. He put wood on it. Abraham tied up Isaac and put him on the altar. He was ready to sacrifice his son. He held the knife over Isaac. But an angel spoke to Abraham. He told Abraham not to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham had sufficiently obeyed God and not withheld anything from God. God loved Abraham for being completely obedient.
This story isn’t about God Almighty imposing His authority over us and bullying us. It is a test of connection of our heart to God. It is a test of our faith and trusting that God’s is always taking care of us. We can trust that God does all things for our benefit!
How do we apply this to our lives? How can we get the right perspective and heart’s priorities all the time? And why is resetting our priorities so important?
Resetting our priorities helps remove spiritual blindness. So many times we proclaim that we have faith in God but the actions betray us.
A friend said, “Jade, I have a strong testimony of Jesus Christ but I am so busy with family and work…I can’t go to church.” So I invited him to come to church and show himself the degree of his actual love for God. Is God more important than whatever excuses we have? Can we sacrifice a mare few hours to pray, read scriptures, serve at church and devote ourselves to God? Can we be obedient when we don’t know what the outcome might be?
Our physical actions help us reset our heart’s priorities and reinforce the new empowered beliefs that we’ve adopted. Actions really do speak louder than words. As awesome as our pure intention is, there are still some beliefs and thoughts that are misaligned to God when our actions don’t reflect our intentions.
For those who are sick, overwhelmed and stressed out, all I can say is, realign and reset your priorities so that God comes first in your heart NO MATTER WHAT then you will suddenly feel an amazing peace. Everything will fall into place as it should better than you could ever imagine.
As difficult as this may seem, it is infinitely liberating. Once you’ve learned this skill, you’ll never be the same again.
Here is the powerful steps to follow.
- Write down what is taking up your heart’s space right now. Identify your heart’s loves, fears, worries etc.
- Imagine surrendering and sacrificing it ALL on the altar to God until you have nothing left.
- Decide now, what you will do from the point of nothingness. Do you still want to commit to God and allow Him to come first in your life?
- If yes, then fully trust that God will give it ALL back and more! Entrust it all to Him and fully open up the heart.
The other reason why God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son is so that Abraham can learn about the actual sacrifice that God will make with His son Jesus Christ to redeem us all. Redeem to me is to connect to us all.
