Not all head or neck tension is the same. In the past, you might not be aware that there are so many different types of head or neck tension. As we are learning to have better health, we will need to be more connected to the body and be able to understand what is happening within.
Pause for a moment and learn to recognize what this head or neck tension is about. When you understand your body you are able to permanently change for good thus preventing future head or neck tension or quickly managing them if they do come along.
Types of Head and Neck Tension Summary:

Symptom Management Vs. Resolving Root Causes
For many people today, unfortunately, the go-to solutions for a head or neck tension is usually take a pain-killer (a drug)! The pain-killer of choice is most likely a neurotoxin, which stops your body and brain from feeling the pain anymore (although the pain is still there). Basically it is stopping the communication between your brain and body; however, the problem (imbalance or Diss-EASE) is still there! It has not been resolved at the root. They symptom has just been painted over. This is similar to addressing a screaming fire alarm by removing the body: it stops the noise, but the fire is raging in the background.
We advocate taking a more proactive approach by considering the root causes of the problem first.
Head or Neck Tension Overview
Today we are talking about head or neck tension. There are many things that may cause head or neck tension.
These are just examples and some suggestions. It is not comprehensive. This is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease or replace competent medical advice. Rather, think of this as a guide to keep yourself well and perhaps understand the root cause of your head or neck tension.
Use this as a guide to help you take a holistic approach to your wellness. When we understand the root causes, we can better address the problem and maybe even removing the need to address the problem in the first place. In essence, eventually as we master this skill, we will be healthier and happier beings overall.
Hormonal Head or Neck Tension
What is it?
Many women are prone to getting head or neck tension just before they start their periods–a time when estrogen levels take a dive. The estrogen/progesterone balance plays a pivotal role in whether you get hormone related head or neck tension. Women are very sensitive to the hormone level fluctuations.
What can we do about it?
There are lots of things you can do to balance the hormones in your body.
- Rub the ClaryCalm essential oil blend (Women’s Monthly Blend) on your lower abs several times a day.
- Rub Whisper (Women’s blend) on the bones behind the ears, inside of the forearms and inhale.
- Take 1-2 phytoestrogen complex capsules 1-2 times a day.
Preventative practises

What is it?
When you have too much going on, you might be lacking rest and sleep. You will feel drained and your mind will no longer make sense of anything.
What can we do about it?
- Rub Lavender, Balance (Grounding Blend), and Frankincense on your forehead, bottom of big toes, neck, ears and temples.
- Inhale these essential oils deeply and lay down. Listen to gentle music. Taking a short nap would be very helpful.
Preventative practices
Use Balance (Grounding Blend) morning and night. Balance (Grounding Blend) helps you be be grounded throughout the day. Take one task at a time. Prioritize your to-do list and just do the most important things first.

Not Enough Oxygen Head or Neck Tension
What is it?
When we are stressed, we forget to breathe deeply.
What can we do about it?
- Breathe Peppermint oil & Frankincense oil deeply in.
- Put this blend in a diffuser or simply mix this blend in your hands and inhale.
- Smell for 5-10 mins. Get the oxygen molecules inside.
Preventative practises

Transitional Head or Neck Tension
What is it?
This type of head or neck tension is when you have difficulty switching roles. For example, a friend of mine gets head or neck tension most days when she gets home from a long day of teaching high school kids. She looks forward to coming home and resting but instead she gets a big head or neck tension. We discovered that she has a hard time letting the school worries go and just being present. She just wants to get on with her role as a mother and wife. We discovered that Rosemary worked immediately for her.
What can we do about it?

Dehydrated Head or Neck Tension
What is it?
When you become dehydrated your brain tissues loses water causing your brain to shrink and pull away from the skull. This triggers the pain receptors surrounding the brain, giving you a head or neck tension. Your blood volume dropping will cause less blood and oxygen flow to your brain. There are several causes to dehydration, such as not getting enough water, or quality water that you can absorb, too much alcohol, when you are detoxing, too much salt or sugar etc.
What can we do about it?
- Lemon and peppermint in water can help you absorb water easier. With the oxygen molecules in these two oils, you will be able to quickly hydrate the body.
Preventative practises
Sipping lemon oil and/or peppermint oil in water throughout the day will help your body be hydrated. Sports players report they have less cramping in their muscles if they add lemon oil and peppermint oil in their water before a gain. Dehydration can be a dangerous. An alternative to water is natural unsweetened coconut water a natural source of electrolytes with includes sodium and potassium. Simply add lemon oil and peppermint oil in natural unsweetened coconut water.
Tension Head or Neck Tension
What is it?
This is also called stress head or neck tension. The tension is usually on your shoulders and neck. It is for those who carry a lot of ‘responsibility’ on their shoulders.
What can we do about it?
- You can rub the PastTense oil blend and Deep Blue oil blend on your neck and shoulders.
Preventative practises
Before you go to bed rub AromaTouch oil blend on your neck and shoulders to relax the body. Journal and let go your worries and concerns away. Too much shoulder pain and neck pain indicates that you are carrying more than you need to. Allow the Universe take the load off your shoulders as you work out all of what you can control and what you really can’t control.
Gall Bladder Head or Neck Tension
What is it?
Have you heard the saying, “Feeling Galled about something?”
What is that talking about? It is about feeling bitterness, defeated, anger, wanting to force things, and unwilling to forgive someone or something.
These negative emotions can literally hurt the gall bladder. If left unresolved, it can lead to gall stones and other gallbladder infections and diseases. So this is a good sign for you to make some changes now before things get worse. Before your body yells at you.
What can we do about it?
- Rub Lemon oil, Geranium oil, and Juniper Berry oil on top of your gallbladder area.
- Breathe these oils in deeply.
- Do it before bed to give you a good nights rest.
Preventative practises
The role of the gallbladder is to store bile for the liver. The liver is the organ that digests and breaks down fats for the elimination of waste products in the body. Bile is contains bile acids needed for digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. When we are feeling angry or bitter etc. we disrupt the proper digestive system causing imbalance.
Study the emotions relating to Lemon oil, Geranium oil and Juniper Berry oil. Assist these oils in allowing yourself to trust in the Universe more. Letting things you can’t control go. Accepting love and forgiving.
Blood Pressure
What is it?
Tension caused by irregular blood pressure whether it is high or low.
What can we do about it?
- Apply Ylang Ylang, Petitgrain, and Marjoram over the heart reflexes and inhale.
Preventative practises
When you feel the imbalance of the blood pressure, rest up before it goes too far.
Emotionally it is about not flowing with life as it comes. Think of positive affirmations to help you change and flow with life.
