Focus on Creating Joy
Joy has little to do with circumstances and everything to do with our focus.
For some, Joy is elusive because we aren’t focusing on joy. We are often focusing on not being stressed, depressed and miserable. An example of this lack of focus is exemplified in the name of medications. We have anti-depressants but we don’t have more-joy prescription meds.
I learned that lasting powerful peace-filled joy comes from focusing on two things. Those two things are (1) God and (2) our Earthly calling. When we unattach to all the social conditions for joy, we see life as simple and that joy is something obtainable by everyone.
Let me explain.
#1 Focus on God.
Why? God is our Heavenly Father. He loves us. Focusing on Him means this:
- You are deeply LOVED.
- You are important and matter to God.
- God wants you to be happy! You can be happy.
- You have an important purpose to play and place in the universe. You are meant to be here at this time and place.
- It is possible to discover your divine life’s purpose and calling.
- You belong to Him.
- You are a victor.
- You possess great divine power, intelligence, and light within.
- Your divine nature desires to move towards perfection.
- Your body knows how to heal. You are not broken or deficient. God made you perfectly.
- God wants to help you overcome trials, difficulties, and afflictions of every kind.
- You have natural gifts and talents which will help you in your divine purpose on Earth.
- Everything around you is consecrated for your good and you get a choice to accept it or not. There is a perfection in things if you choose to see it.
- You are safe and protected when you allow yourself to connect to the Divine energy.
- You can fully trust God.
- God wants to bless you.
- Angels are assigned to you and want to assist when you ask. So you are never alone.
- You can rest & play.
This alone can help those people who are self-sabotaging and self-abusing to allow the universe to finally bless them. This knowledge gives us all the self-confidence, resilience, and reassurance no matter what is happening. Our heart is filled with hope and we don’t let the temporary things bother us. When you have a healthy love of God, you will easily have a healthy love of self, because you see how He really loves you. You understand your true identity.
#2. Focus on our Earthly Calling or life’s purpose.
I truly believe that we all have a wonderful divine purpose on Earth. We all have important roles to play. Our Earthly calling is simply something we do with our divine gift and talents to better the world. We will have more joy when we serve the world within our ‘zone of genius.’ We will feel fulfilled and happy. Our focus is on growth, love, service, joy and blessing the world. Our focus should not be on our problems, fears, and worries. Everything we focus on grows. You can intentionally choose what you want to focus on. Yes, we need to take care of our responsibility but if our dominant focus is on loving others, then we will do our work with joy. Our responsibilities won’t be so burdensome.
Like most parents, I want my children to be happy and joyful. If I am to help them achieve that, I need to help them focus on these two things regardless of their circumstances. The circumstances serve as a learning ground to apply these two focus. I am not interested necessarily on what happens to them but how they respond powerfully to the world.
Example with children
Our home is the ideal training ground. Since I have teenagers now, we have teen-age issues to deal with. Friends, identity, self-esteem, grades, clubs, growing bodies and changing into adulthood.
Whatever their issue is, I am so grateful that the solution is always the same. Connect to God for clearer perspective and focus on divine life’s purpose.
- Our teenage children are learning that their body is intelligent and it is going through the changes it needs to. With a divine perspective we work on loving and accepting the body at every stage. We can enjoy each stage.
- When exams and pressures of homework deadlines loom, we teach them that the learning skills, the resilience skills, the time management skills are with the focus. That struggle is good training. These skills will be good for them as they learn to serve their purpose in the future. The short term grades doesn’t matter as much. How they operate under pressure with faith is what matters most. My children are still expected to do chores no matter what is happening. They have to learn to delegate, collaborate, look for solutions, and plan ahead if they know they can’t do their chores. I am happy to help out as long as they ask and show responsibility for themselves.
- During stressful times, our children still need to find time to take care of their body, be kind to others and connect to God. We are teaching them how to have divine peace and joy. Joy is not an attachment to the changeable, impermanent things such grades, good/bad teachers, popularity and acceptance, magazine worthy bodies and clear skin. It is an attachment or focus on the two important things. 1. God and 2. Our life’s purpose. We ask questions like, ‘Can you still show up for God even if you have a face full of zits or do you turn inwards and think of just yourself?’
If our children have this very important skill down as adults they will blossom, as parents they will be awesome and as citizens of the world, they will be powerful.
We try to make sure, our children are safe to mess up under our roof. We allow them to struggle as they develop these skills. It is very rewarding to watch them grow and find their happiness and joy too.
