In the world of essential oil, Coriander isn’t Cilantro! Many people use it interchangeably because it is the same plant. Coriander oil is distilled from the coriander seed. Cilantro is distilled from the leaves.
Egyptians called Coriander the Herb of Happiness. It was found in the tombs of Tutankhamun and Ramses II. The Chinese incorporated Coriander into their medical practice as long ago as 207 B.C.E. and believed that Coriander could bestow IMMORTALITY.
Coriander shares similar properties to many essential oils as far as it helping your body to balance and cleaning up toxins in the cells. Remember that when you are cleaning out your cells you are also cleaning up mental junk too.
Many people get Cilantro and Coriander mixed up. It is different in chemical make up. You can see that in the chart below. Cilantro oil comes for the flowery leaf and the Coriander oil is from the seed. Coriander is 70-90% Linalool. (1) Properties of Linalool are: Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory, Antifungal, Sedative, Antiepileptic/Anticonvulsant.
BODY
Coriander is a circulatory stimulant and encourages the release of toxins from the body, thereby improving conditions such as inflammatory concerns in the muscles, bones, digestive, gut, or lymph systems. Think of Coriander as a wonderful cleaner inside your body. It clears junk and debris so your body functions properly. Your cell receptors need to be clean so that the cells can communicate optimally.
Occasional Menstrual Cramps: Rub on lower abs during that time of the month.1
Natural Deodorant: Rub diluted Coriander under the armpits. It helps calm excessive sweating.
Nausea: Rub on tummy and inhale.
Digestive Concerns: Indigestion, flatulence, and bloating. Extra Coriander makes DigestZen Blend work faster. Coriander is already in the DigestZen Blend. If DigestZen isn’t working fast enough add a few drops of Coriander to it.

Coriander is The Oil of Personal Integrity. According to the Emotions & Essential Oils, the negative emotions Coriander oil helps to release are as follows: Controlled by others, self-betrayal, drudgery, conforming
The positive properties we can incorporate are the following: True to self, inner guidance, integrity, unique
Coriander supports the gut and therefore helps with mental clarity. The gut has more brain chemicals than even our brains. It is a great oil to improve memory and mental functions. When our gut is unhappy and sick, we tend to complain about ‘brain-fog’ and similar concerns about the lack of mental functions.
The clarifying nature of Coriander oil helps you think clearly and see when you are allowing yourself to be controlled by others. Your discomfort will give you a clue that you are not allowing yourself to make your own choices. Sometimes, we have trained ourselves to be TOO accommodating and considerate that we betray ourselves unknowingly.
Self-betrayal is when we conform to others expectations and not our own. We all have an ability to choose, unfortunately some of us forget that we have the power to CHOOSE. When we give that power away to others we feel depressed, uncomfortable and life becomes drudgery. Life no longer becomes fun.
If you are paying attention then you will notice that your body is talking to you and telling you that you have given away your power to choose. Usually the physical body will tell you this with lack of air, or some sort of gut discomfort.
Coriander not only physically helps the gut calm down and balance but it helps release the negative emotions stuck in the gut interrupting the normal physical functions of the gut to operate properly.
If you feel like you don’t know what to do even if you know that you are allowing others to control you, use coriander anyways. Don’t hold yourself back and think, “What’s wrong with me?” Coriander will help clear away things you weren’t aware was there and may not ever need to know all the details.
A lady I was talking to recently complained about all the people in her life. She was trying to be positive but I can tell she couldn’t. When I tried to explain to her that she has the ability to choose happiness and sweetness, and can actually take back her power, she could not understand it. I asked her if she liked Coriander, and she replied that it ‘stunk’ to her. I didn’t pursue this conversation to point out how when which situation it is that she is giving her power away. I simply told her she may want to smell and take coriander, 2 drops twice a day internally for 3 months. I told her to journal about herself not necessarily listing out how people have been mean and wronged her, but how she can choose differently. For example, if you say, “People don’t understand me, they think I am weird.” Recondition the mental program by saying, “I love and understand me. I love my weirdness. It is ok for me to be different.” It is not difficult to change. Let the oil help you figure this out. You don’t have to do it alone.
Sometimes because we have so much self-loathing (and we are unaware of it) when someone confronts us with negativity, we get a sudden SHOCK to our system. It is like an electrocution. Our body, gut and heart feels it long after it has happened. We struggle to get rid of it and resolve it. Here is a blend by Dr. Lawton you can use to help you resolve this quickly before it finds a place to reside inside your body and cause long term problems.
This is an AWESOME blend!!
Balancing after a Heavy Emotional Confrontation: 3 drops Coriander, 2 drops Patchouli, 2 drops White Fir, 2 drops Sandalwood. Mix gently and then apply to the back of the neck and inhale from cupped hands. (Dr. Sue Lawton)
The Patchouli reconnects your body and mind fully from that intense trauma. White Fir helps remove generational fears that just came up through you at this moment. Sandalwood connects you back to the divine and reminds you to get energy and power from there to restore your soul. An event like that sometimes makes you pull on your own energy resources and drains you. Of course the Coriander in this blend reminds you to be YOU.
SPIRIT
Spiritually Coriander reminds you that you are a special Child of God with amazing powers within.
Be True to Yourself: Smell coriander and determine where you are regarding loyalty to self. If the oil smells good then you are ready to work on being more true to yourself. If it is stinky or offensive to you then you may want to do some self-examination and figure out what you really believe about yourself.
Perhaps you are conforming because you want to be liked and not confident in who you are. Spend some time recognizing your true value as a child of God. When we learn to love ourselves and accept ourselves simply because we are loved by God then we will have an easier time accepting love from others.
If you struggle with this, then start a gratitude journal. Write all the things you are grateful for about your life, about yourself and recognize the tender mercies given to you by God. You have heard of gratitude journal before, but until you actually do it, you don’t realize the power it has to help you refocus you mental energy in creating more of what you appreciate! Be grateful for the air you breathe, the computer you are using, the lovely people around you, the country you live in and much much more. You will know when you’ve done a great job at this when your heart is light and happy.
When we give ourselves all the love we need, then we no longer need to be validated and overly please others.
Another form of self betrayal is to be contrary and rebel. We do this to help us clearly see that we are unique. When you are true to yourself, on the outside, it may look like you are conforming at times, but now you know WHY you are doing what you are doing and that YOU have chosen to do it the same too because you no longer need the praises of others nor do you care what others think of you.
Rob Young, a dōTERRA owner said that he is too busy being true to himself and his mission to have time to think about what others think. That is liberation isn’t it? We do not want other people’s fear and inhibition to be our own. Besides, what people think of us is none of our business!

You have an inner compass that will guide you in the task of discovering who you are. When you use Coriander often, your inner guidance will be clearer. You will detect your life purposes through this journey. You will evolve as a person.
We are all unique and have an individual path to take as part of the grand plan of things. It may be easier to look a a cute child and seeing the uniqueness of that child. Your love is unconditional. So should you see yourself.
Integrity: Smell Coriander alone or add coriander to Bergamot, Cassia or Clary Sage as you practice honoring and loving yourself. Affirmation: I love being me!
Integrity:
Integrity: The Mother of Many Virtues. “The dictionary defines integrity as a firm adherence to a code of moral values (see Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary). It connotes soundness and incorruptibility. It is the mother of many virtues. It begins when we deal justly with ourselves… Deal justly with others.”
James E. Faust (2) It is respecting the natural law of harvest.
“Till I die I will not remove mine integrity from me.” (Job 27:5)
