People may ask, “Why do bad and painful things happen?” With these lenses we mentally list out all the things that are not going right about our lives.
- My kids are not doing the right things. I am not happy when they…
- My husband isn’t cooperating. He doesn’t understand me.
- Financially we are struggling…
- The bills keep piling up…
- I keep getting headaches…there is something wrong with my body…
- We can’t get ahead on anything…
- Why is it so hard…?
- Why can’t I…?
In reality, it isn’t because we are simply victims to a harsh world. It is that we have the endure-to-the-end-martyr mentality. People struggling with these things are asking, ‘why can’t they be more comfortable?’ They have the wrong lenses on and therefore will never find comfort and happiness. In this state, we are focusing on our own version of what we think comfortable and happiness should be. We keep looking for happiness and comfort in the places where it is NOT.
How we can change the discomfort to comfort? We simply need to change our focus or our lenses.1
In reality, as part of the learning and progression process we will have our struggles and discomforts. We all need to descend before we ascend and transcend.2 Look at the many examples of spiritual giants in the scriptures and you will see that they all paid the price for divine growth. Joseph of Egypt, Moses, Enoch, Job, etc.
God is more concerned about our progression than our comfort. However, when we focus on progression more, we will naturally be more comfortable! We must realize that discomfort and pain is the price we pay for our divine progression and refinement. It is the currency of Heaven and we must accept it if we want to find happiness and comfort. If we want to hang out with the spiritual giants, we must be a giant ourselves.
Our hearts are strong enough and will be able to endure that discomfort. We can and must pass through the discomforts first. It isn’t a passive experience however. We must actively work out our misalignments with each realization of fears and false beliefs. Our heart compass will guide us in the right direction.
When we release our current limited understanding and see things in the light of God’s love, we will see that it is necessary for Him to let us learn to walk on our own. He, like a loving parent, is never far away. God is always encouraging us with His love and light. He will give us all that He has but He can’t give us what He has become. That is something we have to learn on our own. He has been through that learning curve and is confident that we can too.
Like a toddler learning how to walk, as we keep getting up again each time we fall, we will discover growth. We will find a deeper sense of accomplishment and reward as we allow ourselves to go through each of the learning opportunities in our lives. With new strength and skills, we will be more comfortable in our sojourn. We will have strength to handle greater things in the future. Which in turn will bring us more happiness and comfort than we can ever imagine.
Instead of crawling, we will be walking and then running joyfully through life. At this point, we have transcended.
Let’s start asking the right questions. “How can this ‘obstacle’ be an ‘opportunity’ for growth?” and “How can I turn this ‘pain’ into ‘passion’?”
I have found so much joy and comfort when I have spiritual sight and stop resisting by fully letting go of my limited understanding. Remember, you are only required to go through a few experiences at a time. We can grow precept upon precept.
