The topic of Cholesterol is a topic full of myths and misunderstandings. What we’ve been fed by the media especially in the US, Australia, UK, Canada, and NZ about cholesterol is wrong and continues to be perpetuated.
It has become a delusion! A delusion is a belief held even when evidence proves the contrary. What is that delusion? It is that the level of cholesterol in your blood is a main risk factor of heart disease and stroke! In other words, they are saying, ‘fat is evil.’
The level of cholesterol in our blood is NOT a main risk factor of heart disease and stroke! Cholesterol fat is actually good. Of course, like all things, there needs to be a healthy balance to cholesterol levels too. We want our cholesterol levels around 200. If it is below 150, we could be harming ourselves.1
Dr. Mercola is one of my favorite health experts. He says that the level of cholesterol in the blood is NOT linked to heart disease and not all fats are bad. He supports Dr. Ernest N. Curtis’ research, and quotes from the book The Cholesterol Delusion.
The Cholesterol Delusion systematically refutes these prevailing theories that link diet and blood cholesterol levels to coronary heart disease and heart attacks. This book opposes the very foundation of the “risk factor” paradigm that has dominated cardiovascular research in particular and much of medical research in general for the past 50 years.
The Cholesterol Theory
The Cholesterol Theory was developed by the German pathologist Rudolf Virchow who discovered lipid (medical term for fat molecules) accumulation in arterial walls in corpses. He theorize that it came from their diet. Other scientists have done studies, sometimes flawed, to prove this theory.
To add to that belief, in the 1940s, a University of Minnesota researcher, Ancel Keys, did some correlated studies and promoted a low cholesterol diet. This flawed study is still quoted. There are a few more studies that followed and perpetuated this myth. Dr. Mercola goes on and explains more delusions about cholesterol myths being used to get people to buy more drugs. 2
On the other hand, scientist, who were searching for a link between LDL cholesterol and premature death in those over 60, discovered in a study involving nearly 70,000 people that the body creates 80-90% of its own cholesterol. They discovered there is no solid link between cholesterol levels and heart disease. Moreover, 99.3 % of patients on cholesterol reducing medications experienced no benefits. On the other hand, the cholesterol drugs cause many health problems, including many dangerous health conditions.
Cholesterol-lowering drugs are harmful in many ways.
Here are a few side effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs:
- Depression
- Memory & brain problems
- Hormone imbalance
- Pain & more tissue & muscle damage (muscle atrophy too)
- Heart failure
- Fatigue
- Risk of cancer
- Liver problems
- Depleted coenzyme Q10 levels in the body3
Dr. Mercola says, “cholesterol is an insulin resistant problem.” It causes the liver to store excess sugar as fat because the pancreas isn’t doing its job. He also suggests two main things we can do. He recommends having optimal vitamin D levels. Vitamin D synthesis depends on cholesterol. Get more vitamin D from healthy exposure to the sun. The second thing he suggests is to reduce chronic inflammation. If you think of inflammation as fire (flames), then think of cholesterol as a fire blanket. It puts out or patches up the fires. Reducing the chronic inflammation, reduces the need for excess build up of cholesterol plaque. Can you see how the body is so brilliant?
What can you do to reduce the excess plaque? According to Dr. Mercola, you can do these 8 things:
- Reduce your waist circumference to within normal limits
- Reduce or eliminate smoking
- Reduce your net carbs to 20 to 30 percent of your total caloric intake
- Eat healthy saturated fats (eat more high quality Omega 3 fats)
- Maintain your blood pressure within normal limits
- Get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day
- Get up and move around during the day
- Improve your gut microbiome4
Do these things sound like a holistic approach to you? Yes. I would take it a step further by including great sleep, reducing stress, detoxing the body on all levels including Energy Balancing with Faith.
Low cholesterol levels is dangerous. The brain is made up of mostly fat. Your brain needs cholesterol to produce healthy levels of estrogen, testosterone, cortisone, and a host of other vital hormones. Consider cholesterol like healthy engine grease which keeps things moving smoothly inside your brain and body. If the brain is not greased up and functioning properly can you see why this can lead to brain and memory problems and hormone imbalance problems?
Cholesterol Is Good
Our body uses cholesterol in many other ways. Cholesterol assist the body in producing cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D, and bile acids to help for digestion.
Cholesterol is like a bandaid inside our body for acute inflammation situations. Cholesterol has an important job when it senses tissue damage caused by inflammation. Inflammation helps your body know where to heal and repair. Cholesterol constricts blood vessels to stop you from bleeding to death. Cholesterol works like a glue to contain bad invaders like viruses and bacteria, until your immune system brings in chemicals to fight them. You see why acute inflammation and cholesterol are not bad?
On the other hand, when we have chronic inflammation, the body is overworked to the point where it is overproducing cholesterol everywhere. When you have a cut on the outside of your body, your body produces a protective skin seal called a scab. The body’s way to seal up internal damage is to produce an internal scab-like covering called plaque. Chronic inflammation causes a lot of internal tissue damage, which causes an over production of plaque which in turn causes restriction of blood flow in the arteries. The plaque we hear about is not necessarily cholesterol. Chronic inflammation is the cause of the plaque not cholesterol.
Cholesterol is actually the good guy. The liver makes 75% of your body’s cholesterol. The immune system calls on the liver to assist when there is any inflammation in the body. The liver sends the cholesterol into the blood stream to assist in creating new cells for the tissue repair. No cell in the body can be form without cholesterol.
Chronic inflammation is caused by external factors, such as and overgrowth of fungus, and cholesterol is one of your body’s tools to deal with and heal from chronic inflammation.
